His outstanding contribution to the development of our university, his outstanding work for our values and mission, scientific achievements, public service and personal contribution beyond his area of responsibility were honored with a master’s degree honoris causa in biomedical engineering from the Campus Biomedico University in Rome. After 40 years of work, Paolo Dario, Professor of Biomedical robotics at Sant’Anna School, who has received the honorary degree on November 28, gave his Lectio Magistralis speech on “Verso le nuove frontiere dell'Ingegneria Biomedica: dalla Biorobotica alla Bionica e oltre –New frontiers of Biomedical Engineering: Biorobotics, Bionics and Beyond”. At the ceremony for the official opening of the Campus Biomedico new academic year 2018-2019, Paolo Dario together with Raffaele Calabrò, rector of the Campus Biomedico, Pierdomenico Perata, rector of Sant'Anna School, and Eugenio Guglielmelli, deputy rector of Campus Biomedico, had the opportunity to discuss the latest research in the field of bio-robotics and bionics.

Focusing on robotics and bionics applications in medicine, Dario discussed the role of minimally invasive technologies in tackling disabilities, amputation and paralysis with the support of robotic artificial organs and other active implantable devices featuring direct interfaces to the human body.

Professor Paolo Dario is the coordinator of the Sant’Anna PhD Program in BioRobotics and the author of 400+ journal publications. Co-author of 50+ international patents, he is also the coordinator of national and European projects including ARTES 4.0, a Competence Centre to promote and accelerate innovation through public-private partnerships combining Industry 4.0 technological expertise and associated enabling technologies.

Professor Paolo Dario is a member of the Center of Advanced Mechanisms and Robotics (CAMAR) at Tianjin University’s School of Mechanical Engineering, the Advanced Innovation Center for Intelligent Robots and Systems at the Beijing Institute of Technology, and is serving as a member of the Khalifa University of Science and Technology Committee in Abu Dhabi.

Perhaps, his greatest achievement so far is that he has inspired the next generation of scientists. He infused his students with a love of science and motivated them to pursue their own ideas for a better future.
